Pet Shop Licence

Applying for a Pet Shop Licence.

If you sell animals as pets and/or keep animals with intention to sell them at any premises including your home, you will need a licence.

Apply for a licence

To apply for a Pet Shop licence, you will need to send us the following documents:

Documents may be posted or emailed to hccs@guildford.gov.uk. We regret that we cannot accept photographs of documents, only clear scans.

The application fee is £250.00 which is payable by cheque or card over the phone. All cheques should be made payable to Guildford Borough Council.

Please note that this type of licence will always expire on the 31 December of each year regardless of your application date.

Planning permission

You should be aware of the local planning requirements with regard to the proposed use of the premises. We advise that you should enter early discussion with the planning authority before construction of any part of the building that may be subject to planning restriction or control.

Inspection

Once we have received your application, the Dog Warden will arrange for an inspection, to ensure the welfare of the animals and to make sure accommodation is suitable. You should anticipate a visit shortly after your application is submitted.

Renew a licence

To run a pet shop, you must have a current licence. To renew this licence, please send us:

The renewal fee is £212.00 which is payable by cheque or card over the phone. All cheques should be made payable to Guildford Borough Council.

Documents may be posted or emailed to hccs@guildford.gov.uk. We regret that we cannot accept photographs of documents, only clear scans.

You will be sent a reminder several months before the expiry of your licence. If you do not wish to renew, please inform us in writing.

Approval of licence

We will aim to respond to your application as soon as possible. If you have not heard from us within a reasonable period, please get in contact with us. We must process your application before the licence can be granted, so Tacit Consent does not apply.

Your premises does not require an inspection before the issue of a renewed licence. An inspection will be carried out during the course of the year.

New animals

If you have acquired new categories of animals for sale under the terms of your licence, you will need to submit a report of all new animals and their accommodations to Health and Community Care. Your licence records will then be updated and a new inspection may be required.
