Applying for a Pet Shop Licence.
If you sell animals as pets and/or keep animals with intention to sell them at any premises including your home, you will need a licence.
Apply for a licence
To apply for a Pet Shop licence, you will need to send us the following documents:
- A completed You can complete this by hand or on your computer
- A copy of a valid Insurance Policy
Documents may be posted or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. We cannot accept photographs of documents, only clear scans.
The application fee is £185.00 which is payable by card over the phone by calling Customer Services on 01483 505050.
Please note that this type of licence will always expire on the 31 December of each year, regardless of your application date.
You should be aware of the local planning requirements with regard to the proposed use of the premises. We advise that you should enter early discussion with the planning authority before construction of any part of the building that may be subject to planning restriction or control.
Once we have received your application, our Dog Warden will arrange for an inspection, to ensure the welfare of the animals and to make sure accommodation is suitable. You should anticipate a visit shortly after your application is submitted.
Renew a licence
To run a pet shop, you must have a current licence. To renew this licence, please send us:

- An updated copy of your Insurance Policy
The renewal fee is £149.00 which is payable by card over the phone by calling Customer Services on 01483 505050.

You will be sent a reminder several months before the expiry of your licence. If you do not wish to renew, please inform us in writing.
Approval of licence
We will aim to respond to your application as soon as possible. If you have not heard from us within a reasonable period, please get in contact with us. We must process your application before the licence can be granted, so Tacit Consent does not apply.
Your premises does not require an inspection before the issue of a renewed licence. An inspection will be carried out during the course of the year.
If you have acquired new categories of animals for sale under the terms of your licence, you will need to submit a report of all new animals and their accommodation to Health and Community Care. Your licence records will then be updated and a new inspection may be required.
Upcoming changes to animal welfare licensing laws
We are aware of the upcoming changes to the Animal Welfare Licensing laws which come into statute on 1 October 2018. We are working towards fully understanding these and implementing them as smoothly as possible. They affect anyone involved in the following animal activities:
selling animals as pets
hiring out horses
keeping or training animals for exhibition
home boarding of dogs
boarding of dogs in kennels
boarding for cats
