Guildford welcomes largest Women's Lacrosse World Cup ever
Twenty-five nations are competing for the title of World Lacrosse Champions this July in Guildford, at the largest elite women's sporting event in the UK in 2017, and the largest Women's Lacrosse World Cup ever.
We hosted a welcome reception last night at the Guildford Guildhall for teams who have travelled from around the globe to participate in the event, which runs from 12 - 22 July at Surrey Sports Park. In attendance were representatives from across the whole Lacrosse community - the International Federation, English Lacrosse, the Organising Committee, participating teams, officials, sponsors, local volunteers and schools.
Cllr Paul Spooner, Leader of Guildford Borough Council says: "We are thrilled to support and help sponsor the 2017 Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford. We welcome all the competitors and visitors from around the world, and hope they enjoy their stay in our beautiful, historic borough."
Cllr Spooner added: "We recently adopted a new Guildford Health and Wellbeing Strategy which places sport and physical activity at its core. We hope that such a prestigious tournament on our doorstep, showcasing the best players in the world, will help inspire a new generation to play sport - and perhaps try something new. Good luck to all the teams!"
The opening ceremony, which takes place today, will be attended by HRH The Princess Royal. England, as the host nation, will be taking on Wales in the opening game, directly after the opening ceremony.
The 25 nations competing to be crowned champions include current World Cup holders USA, Canada, Australia and England.
Matches will be played until Tuesday 18 July, with further knock-out stages culminating with the Final of the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women's Lacrosse World Cup on 22 July 2017.
