Council Leader welcomes Chinese delegation from Dongying
On Monday (17 July) Leader of Guildford Borough Council, Cllr Paul Spooner, Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Nigel Manning and Managing Director James Whiteman welcomed officials from the Chinese city of Dongying to Guildford at the Guildhall.
During the visit, Cllr Spooner welcomed the Chinese delegation to the town and an expression of intent to develop a partnership agreement between Guildford and the city of Dongying was signed.
In his welcoming speech the Leader of Guildford Borough Council, Cllr Paul Spooner said:
"With its extraordinary economic growth in recent decades, it is impossible to think about developing new international relationships without thinking about China. As China has emerged as a global power, there are new opportunities for partnerships between British and Chinese communities to develop and flourish. There are so many potential mutual benefits in terms of trade, investment and through the exchange of knowledge and ideas."
Cllr Spooner added:
"I look forward to establishing and developing the partnership between Guildford and Dongying and, as it states in the expression of intent that we signed, enhancing the understanding and friendship between our places and people."
The partnership agreement will seek to promote economic and trade ties and co-operation in aspects of science and technology, energy, culture, tourism, sports, health-care, education and other relevant fields.
