Art for all in Guildford - get ready for the Big Draw

Creative local residents are encouraged to get involved in an exciting range of free events for all the family as part of this year's 'The Big Draw' - the world's largest drawing festival.

The Big Draw, which runs from 1 October to 29 October in Guildford, is part of a campaign to get the nation drawing. This year's theme is Living Lines  - which focuses on uniting pencils, pixels and people from across the globe to celebrate the universal language of drawing.

The launch event takes place on Sunday 1 October from 12 to 4pm, at The Village, Guildford.

Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith, Lead Councillor for Heritage and the Arts, says: "This wonderful festival, run in partnership with local arts practitioners and venues, offers inclusive opportunities for everyone, especially young people and those who do not normally have access to the arts.

"All ages, levels and abilities are welcome to take part in activities. There are free, high-quality and creative art workshops for all the family to take part in, and the chance to learn new skills. Workshops range from print making to shadow puppetry, to making small-scale concertina books. There is no limit to how many free Big Draw activities people can take part in, so why not try them all!"

Eleven Guildford venues are taking part in the event, which is organised locally by the Council's Arts Development team. Venues include Watts Gallery, G Live, The Boileroom, Yvonne Arnaud and Guildford Cathedral.

You can also enter the Guildford Borough Big Draw drawing competition which is open to all ages. To enter, simply colour in the competition poster which is at the front of the Big Draw leaflet, draw your favourite meme - or invent your own. The competition poster can also be found in the Guide2Surrey magazine's September and October issues. The winner receives a £40 voucher from George Weill Arts and Crafts Supplies.

You can pick up a copy of the Guildford Borough's Big Draw 2017 leaflet from Guildford Tourist Information Office, 155 High Street, Guildford, GU1 3AJ (opening times: Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5pm) as well as other venues across the borough from September 2017.
