Tunsgate improvements complete
Improvement works to the footpaths and road behind Guildford's iconic Tunsgate Arch are now complete. Finishing touches in the form of benches and a new gate will be added soon to further enhance the area as one of the top shopping and visitor destinations in the South East.
Cllr Matt Furniss, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance, said: "It's fantastic to see work has finished to improve the area surrounding Tunsgate. Developing the town centre as an attraction to encourage more visitors and shoppers to choose Guildford is integral to our vision to regenerate and build on what our town has to offer.
He added: "The work is part of wider investment to revive our historic town centre and provide more pedestrianised areas. Tunsgate footpaths have been replaced with Yorkstone paving and granite kerbs and the road surface renewed with granite setts which has visually uplifted the whole area."
Amanda Masters, General Manager at Experience Guildford (Business Improvement District) said: "Guildford is home to an eclectic mix of prestigious national chain stores and thriving independent businesses, many of which are located in and around Tunsgate. Improving the access and look of this area will have a hugely positive impact on those outlets and to those shopping and visiting."
"We are thrilled to see the work is now finished. Thanks to the revamp we can now welcome more of a European 'café culture' feel to Tunsgate, where restaurants and coffee shops can set up outside in the pedestrianised zone, enabling people to shop, then get together and enjoy eating and drinking al fresco."
She added: "To mark the occasion and celebrate Independent Retail Month, Experience Guildford has organised a Tunsgate Street Party to take place on Thursday 5 July, 3 to 6pm. There will be goody bags, shopping discounts and offers, food and drink sampling plus live music courtesy of Ben's Records. See our Facebook page for more details."
