Mayoral Charity Coronavirus Response Fund for 2020-21
This year, the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Richard Billington has chosen to support the Coronavirus Response Fund as his Mayoral charity, alongside the Mayor of Guildford's Local Support Fund (formerly known as the Mayor of Guildford's Local Distress Fund).
The Council has agreed to match fund donations made to the Mayor's Coronavirus Response Fund via the Mayor's fundraising page (within an agreed budget) during 2020-21.
The Coronavirus Response Fund was set up by the Community Foundation for Surrey to support charities and voluntary organisations that are helping vulnerable, elderly and isolated residents affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Since being established, the fund, which is also backed by Surrey Live and Associated newspapers, has raised over £718,000 for the county.
Under the new Coronavirus regulations, the Council's Annual Meeting did not need to take place in 2020, meaning the current Mayor will remain in office for the municipal year 2020-21.
The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Richard Billington, said: "I am delighted to support this very important fund for my second Mayoral year. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has affected all of our lives and its impact will continue for the months and years to come. I am really grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve and carry out my duties as Mayor of Guildford and First Citizen of our beautiful and historic borough, with the ongoing support of the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marsha Moseley.
"Looking ahead to happier times, once it is safe to do so, we are both excited about visiting communities across our borough and thanking our residents for their efforts, demonstrating amazing community spirit by coming together to help one another during this unprecedented time in our lives.
"During my second year, providing it is safe, I will be supporting as many fundraising opportunities as possible to raise awareness and much needed funds for The Coronavirus Response Fund and The Mayor of Guildford's Local Support Fund."
Laura Thurlow, Chief Executive of the Community Foundation for Surrey said: "We're hugely grateful to the Mayor of Guildford for working with us to raise funds for charities who are supporting local people most in need of help.
"Money raised by the Mayor will enable vital funding support to local community and voluntary organisations that are assisting some of Guildford's most vulnerable people. We want to make sure these crucial organisations have the funding they need to adapt their work during this crisis and enable them to have the capacity they need to meet increased demand for their services during this challenging time."
