Mayor's Award To Honour Coronavirus Community Action

The 2021 Mayor's Award for Service to the Community will honour local residents and groups who have helped the Borough of Guildford during this unprecedented year.

Nominations are now open to recognise the contribution of people who have gone out of their way to improve the lives of others, foster good relationships and encourage positive community spirit.  There will be a new 'Community Heroes Award' this year to celebrate groups whose activities have supported residents affected by the pandemic.

The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Richard Billington, says:

"The past 12 months have been remarkable in many ways, but the way that people have pulled together to come to the assistance of others has been extraordinary and uplifting. This year I'd particularly like to highlight their outstanding contribution to the borough with a new award for those community groups who supported their local residents through the pandemic."

If you know someone or a group who fits this description, you can nominate them by completing an online form. Alternatively you can email CivicSecretary@guildford.gov.uk or call 01483 444031.

"It was a great honour to receive a Mayor's Award for Service to the Community," said David and Judith Hunt, who won an award last year for their work with the 1st Merrow Scout Group and establishing the Beating Hearts Merrow Campaign to raise money for public-access defibrillators and offering basic life support training. "We were pleased to share it with many friends and fellow volunteers, in Scouting, Beating Hearts Merrow and St John's Church."

The deadline for nominations is Friday 5 February.  Successful nominees will be invited to attend an awards event which, depending on social distancing guidelines, may be a virtual celebration.

The Mayor's Award for Service to the Community is again kindly sponsored by The County Club, Guildford. Kevin Lorimer, General Manager of the County Club says: "The County Club is glad to be involved with this prestigious award again. It is a pleasure to recognise the work of individual and groups who have gone above and beyond to help people in their community, especially this year which has been very difficult for so many."
