Get out in Guildford: Dapdune Wharf
Resident Rambler Ben Carter takes us on a stroll around Dapdune Wharf. Escape the bustle of modern life and enjoy the tranquillity of this hidden gem, on the banks of the River Wey.
Dapdune Wharf is an amazing secret place to visit in Guildford far away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. The wharf is located behind the cricket club. It is at the heart of the River Wey Navigation that twists its way through central Guildford.
Dapdune Wharf is run by the National Trust. There is a visitor centre with historical exhibits about the story of the navigations and the people who lived and worked on them. Young visitors can explore old cottages and boats. Don't forget to duck as the ceilings are low!
You will also stumble upon the famous book shed, which stocks a wonderful array of quality second-hand books. Proceeds from the sales support the conservation of the waterway.
Venture across to Dapdune Island to marvel at the wildflowers. This hidden sanctuary is a great place to pause and experience the natural world next to the picturesque River Wey. Can you spot the carved wooden nature sculptures?
Do not miss a boat trip where you can explore Guildford's history from the water. If you are lucky you might spot the blue flash of a kingfisher or watch dabbling ducks float by.
Before you leave, don't forget you can rest and refresh at the quaint Lockkeeper's tea room.
Visit Dapdune Wharf or follow them on Facebook for information about events.
We talked to Dose of Nature who are based at Dapdune Wharf. Find out more about the work they do to help our residents improve their mental health.
