A view over green space in Guildford

A view over green space in Guildford

Our new Air Quality Strategy, which sets out the steps that will be taken over the next five years to improve air quality across the borough, has been approved by councillors.

The document lays out a clear set of priorities and actions that will enable everyone to be part of the journey to improve the air we all breathe. It outlines a proactive approach to improving air quality across the borough.

The strategy builds on our previous air quality commitments. It incorporates the latest scientific evidence and community feedback.

The strategy aims to:

  • create a better understanding of what air pollution is and the urgency needed to limit its impact
  • identify where air pollution comes from
  • encourage more collaboration between us and our air quality partners across Guildford

It sets out a framework to:

  • reduce air pollution
  • protect public health
  • support our wider environmental goals

Some of the key aims include:

  • promoting anti-idling at junctions, traffic lights, schools and level crossings
  • reducing emissions from our fleet of vehicles
  • reviewing our smoke control areas
  • working closely with businesses and residents to establish practical solutions for reducing emissions

Lead Councillor for Regulatory Services, Cllr Merel Rehorst-Smith said:

"I'm delighted that our Air Quality Strategy has been approved. We're proud to be taking a leading role in addressing this critical issue and are committed to reaching our goal as a Council of becoming Net Zero by 2030.

"Clean air is essential for our health and wellbeing. This strategy lays out a clear vision for cleaner air in our borough, reflecting our commitment to tackling air pollution head-on and creating a greener, healthier Guildford for everyone.

"I urge residents and businesses to read the strategy and support our air quality work where they can."
