The Guildford Access Group

Who we are

The Guildford Access Group was first established in 1978 at a time when there was almost no legislation protecting disabled people.

Its membership is completely voluntary. The group is made up of people with disabilities and anyone who is interested in improving access in their community. Individuals with a professional background, elected Guildford Borough councillors, as well as officers from Guildford Borough Council (GBC) and Surrey County Council (SCC) also attend our meetings.

What we do

The Access Group continues to campaign for greater disability awareness so that our community can be truly inclusive.

As a group, our area of influence includes:

  • sports and leisure facilities,
  • transport,
  • access to the countryside,
  • public amenities,
  • polling stations and,
  • awareness of disability issues.

We also work with highway authorities to provide safe pedestrian routes, parking places, and secure crossing points with dropped kerbs.

What we have achieved

The Guildford Access Group is proud of the following achievements:

  • The Mayor's Award for Access
  • Promoting accessibility in Guildford by participating in key borough consultations
