Staff benefits and pension scheme

Pension scheme

On joining Guildford Borough Council, you will be entitled to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) to make provision for an income on retirement. The contribution rate that you pay is based on your actual yearly pensionable pay. We also pay contributions to meet the total cost of your pension. The LGPS offers a wide range of benefits. Annual leave

We offer generous annual leave entitlement, which is in addition to public holiday leave. Entitlement ranges from 22 to 33 days depending on salary band and length of service. You may also request up to three days extra leave per year through a salary sacrifice scheme. Leave entitlements are pro rata for staff working part-time hours.

Work life balance

We fully recognise the benefits of flexible working practices to both employees and the Council. Our flexible working schemes can give you greater flexibility to manage your workload and balance work and any domestic responsibilities you may have. We offer two flexible working schemes:

Formal flexible working requests

These are permanent changes to your working pattern. Any member of staff can request a permanent contractual change to their working pattern and managers will consider these against the needs of the service. Common requests include a 9 day fortnight, reduced hours, term time contracts and working from home. 

Flexible working hours framework

These are temporary or ad hoc changes to your working hours using 'flexi-time'. This can include temporary changes to working hours each week, on a particular day or for a particular period. You can also request to take up to 2 day's leave each calendar month. Your manager will try to accommodate temporary changes to working patterns or leave requests as long as they don't affect the balance of work in the team. 

This scheme is available to most staff across the Council with some exceptions. 

Benefits portal

We are a member of a nationwide scheme offering a range of discounts to all our staff. Among the offers are discounts on most major retailers, cinema tickets, high street gift cards, package holidays and visitor attractions. Our employees are able to access the full range of discounts through our benefits portal.

Private medical scheme

All staff on band 6 and above are offered private medical insurance, which is a taxable benefit. This covers most conditions and treatments and provides dental and optical cover.

Contract car hire

We operate an optional lease car scheme. Eligibility for entry into the scheme is either through annual business mileage or salary band.

Car loan scheme

Loans for the purchase of a car for private and business use are available to all staff who have passed their probation period.

Bicycle loan scheme

We offer one-year interest free employee loans for up to £500 for bicycles. Loan repayments are deducted monthly from salary.

Season ticket loan scheme

We offer interest free employee loans for travel season tickets. Loan repayments are deducted monthly from salary.

Easit network and easit card

We are an easit member organisation, giving our employees access to the easit network - a social enterprise for sustainable travel.

Employees can access a range of benefits including significant savings on public transport, access to car-share schemes and discounts on cycles and electric vehicles.

Professional subscriptions

We will reimburse the cost of one relevant professional subscription each year for staff on band 6 and above.

Staff restaurant

A café (Costa Coffee) is available at our Millmead Office where staff can buy hot meals, sandwiches and drinks.

Relocation scheme

We are aware that moving to the Guildford area may be relatively expensive. We therefore operate a Relocation Scheme to assist new employees in approved cases. Further information is available from Human Resources and prior agreement must be sought to use any element of the scheme.

Developing our staff

We recognise the contribution employees make to the success of our organisation. We develop the skills of all our employees to enable our staff to perform their roles effectively both now and in the future. We provide in-house training and development activities and learning materials and we offer an external qualification training scheme that provides opportunities to study for a job related qualification.

Wellbeing initiatives

We are committed to promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing of our employees. In addition to our generous annual leave and Flexible Working Hours Scheme, our benefits portal and private medical insurance, we also offer:

  • a number of sports clubs and activities, including a scheme of concessionary admissions at our various sports and leisure facilities, including Guildford Spectrum.

  • an Employee assistance programme that provides our employees and their immediate family members with 24/7 access to a free confidential helpline (including telephone and face to face counselling), professional support and online wellbeing information and self-help resources, providing support on a wide range of personal, financial and emotional issues.

  • an annual health and wellbeing week offering a varied programme of health and well-being related activities and sessions which staff can choose to take part in.
