Unoccupied properties used by a charity
What you need to know
A property owned or leased by a registered charity that is unoccupied is exempt from council tax. This means you do not have to pay council tax for the property.
The property:
- does not need to be clear of furniture
- must have been last occupied by the charity
- must have been used for delivering the charity's objectives
The exemption will be granted for up to six months from the date it became unoccupied.
How to apply
- log in to your MyGuildford account (opens new window)
- click the 'council tax and benefits' tile
- select 'continue' on the 'view other services' page
- select 'council tax' on the 'your services' page
- on your account summary page, find the list of quick links
- if you're using a computer or laptop these will be on the right-hand side of the screen
- if you're using a mobile device, click 'quick links'
- In the list of quick links find 'apply for or cancel an exemption'
- Fill in the form telling us:
- the date the property became unoccupied
What happens next?
We'll update your council tax account and issue you with a new bill.
Tell us about a change
If someone moves into the property, you will no longer qualify for the exemption. You must tell us straightaway.
You can tell us about a change online through your MyGuildford account.
You'll need to:
- log in to your MyGuildford account (opens new window)
- click the 'council tax and benefits' tile
- select 'continue' on the 'view other services' page
- select 'council tax' on the 'your services' page
- on your account summary page, find the list of quick links
- if you're using a computer or laptop these will be on the right-hand side of the screen
- if you're using a mobile device, click 'quick links'
- in the list of quick links find 'apply for or cancel an exemption' link.
- follow the steps on the form. We'll need to know the date of the change.
What happens next?
We'll update your council tax account and issue you with a new bill.
