Mayor's Award for Service to the community 2024 for news item

This year's winners show the incredible dedication of volunteers across our borough.

Volunteering comes in many forms. The award winners reflect the diverse nature of community service.

Some outstanding work being done in our communities

  • running drop-ins for older people
  • volunteering as youth leaders and sports coaches
  • keeping villages clean and tidy
  • simply being a good neighbour

In total 27 individuals and organisations received a Mayor's Award for Service to the Community 2024.

The award recognises those who go above and beyond to serve their local community:

  • individuals
  • groups
  • organisations

The Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Masuk Miah, said:
"I want to thank each of our winners for the positive difference they are making to the communities we live in. To hear their stories of volunteering in the community was truly heartwarming and inspiring.

"I hope these stories will inspire others to get more involved in their own communities."

One of the organisations recognised at the Mayor's award was Care for Guildford. It has an amazing team of over 100 volunteers. They provide an outstanding service in our local community:

  • driving Guildford-based residents to and from essential medical appointments
  • providing a shopping service for housebound clients.

Linda Smith, Chairman, Care for Guildford said:
"It was a real honour for Care for Guildford to be recognised in the Mayor's Awards for Service to the Community 2024. And for our long-standing volunteers, Zita Delaney and Jackie Smith to get the recognition they deserve. Both Zita and Jackie have volunteered for over 30 years and have played a key role in evolving and managing our charity.

"The award is particularly important to us at a time when demand for our service is at an all-time high."
Award winners celebrated at a presentation ceremony hosted by The County Club. They were treated to a light afternoon tea and a performance by the Wholenotes Community Choir.

Jane Derbyshire, Chairman of the County Club says:
"The Mayor's Awards are an important event for the Borough, recognising the unseen hard work done in our community. The County Club is proud to sponsor these awards."

The Mayor of Guildford added: "I'd like to thank The County Club for kindly hosting these awards. Their sponsorship makes it possible for us to celebrate our award winners here today."
