We welcomed St Peter's school for a Business Day

St Peter's school Business Day

Year 10 students from St Peter's School explored exciting careers at our offices this week. They discovered the diverse roles and responsibilities within local government.

Chief Executive of Guildford and Waverley borough councils said

'We want to be a part of inspiring the next generation. We gave them a first-hand look at our council to help them think about jobs they might not have considered.

'Sharing different pathways to success with young people is crucial. We're grateful to St Peter's for inviting us to spark their imaginations!

'Our officers made sure the event was dynamic and interactive. This meant we broke away from the traditional 'careers library' visits of the past! We hope the students gained a deeper understanding of local government careers. We hope they will take us up on our offers to join us for work experience.'

Highlights from the visit

Our Chief Executive, Pedro Wrobel, kicked off the visit. Sharing his journey to Local Government, he emphasised how we support our communities. He even quizzed students on local politics and politicians, adding a fun twist they weren't expecting!

Inspiration from our Finance team

Our Finance team engaged students in a fun activity to show them how our finances work. They learned about council budgets, funds and spending by sorting everyday services based on who manages them.

Insights into Human Resources

Our Human Resources team talked about the different jobs you can do at our council. They also explained the salaries and benefits you can get if you work here. Plus, they showed how you can grow your career and learn new things while working with us.

Stories from our events team

The Events team shared stories about planning community events. They talked about how creative and organisational skills make these events successful. They also shared personal stories about how they reached their current positions.

Social media interactive session

The social media team wrapped up with an interactive session on digital communication. Students took part in a social media quiz and worked in groups to create campaigns promoting working at the council. They had the opportunity to pitch their ideas and the winning group walked away with lots of chocolate!

A spokesperson from St Peter's School said:

"Thank you for yesterday's visit! The students gained fantastic insights into local government careers. Our goal is to broaden students' knowledge of work sectors, and this visit showed them the array of job roles and paths available within the council. We're grateful for this opportunity."
