The Mayor, Cllr Sallie Barker MBE, hosted a special afternoon tea in celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). 

When: Friday 7 March 2025

Where: Guildford College

The event was held in partnership with the Surrey Federation of Women's Institutes. It brought together nearly 100 women and raised £3,744 for The Guildford Women's Refuge

Championing women's achievements and advocating for increased action

Award-winning space scientist, broadcaster, and author, Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, delivered the keynote speech. This included her story and how we should all be reaching for the stars. Dame Aderin-Pocock is also known for her work in making:

  • science accessible
  • inspiring the next generation of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics

Representatives from The Guildford Women's Refuge shared

  • a powerful personal story of resilience and overcoming adversity
  • insight into the vital support the charity provides to women and children escaping domestic abuse

Let's Accelerate Action for Women's Equality

This year's IWD theme highlights the importance of collective efforts to 

  • break barriers
  • work towards a more equal future

The Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Sallie Barker MBE said: 

"International Women's Day is a powerful reminder that equality for women is still a work in progress. This year's theme, 'Let's Accelerate Action for Women's Equality' calls on us all to do more.

"My afternoon tea was an excellent platform to amplify women's voices, challenge biases, and inspire future generations. Together, we can turn awareness into action and ensure that equality isn't just a goal but a reality.

"I'm grateful to Chapter's Financial for sponsoring this event."

Thanking the Mayor for an amazing day, Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock said:

"When women get together, things happen. Every woman went away feeling inspired and wanting to collaborate more."

Deputy CEO of Activate Learning, Cheri Ashby, said:

"We were delighted to celebrate International Woman's Day at Activate Learning. Developing and championing our female staff and students is central to supporting our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion organisational intent. Women are positive change agents in society and providing strong female role models for our students is key to raising their aspirations. We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to both the Mayor of Guildford and other external stakeholders who are inspiring our students to achieve more."

The afternoon was an inspiring experience. Attendees enjoyed delicious food  expertly prepared and served by talented students  studying Hospitality and Professional Cookery - level 1 at Guildford College.
