We're investing in new, user-friendly parking technology in our car parks, to improve the experience for residents and visitors.

From Wednesday 7 January, we'll be upgrading our pay-on-foot and pay-and-display machines across our town centre car parks. The works will take a few weeks.

This upgrade is in response to feedback from residents and visitors, who have asked for more convenient payment methods to be made available.

The new machines will provide significant benefits:

  • More payment options: including card, contactless, cash and app options.
  • Improved reliability: the new machines are easier to use, more reliable and cheaper to maintain. This helps provide a better service for residents.
  • Faster transactions: making parking more convenient
  • Accessibility enhancements: bigger, clearer screens with easier to use interfaces.
  • Environmental benefits: reduced paper ticket use and more energy-efficient machines.

Key dates for your diary

Work to upgrade the car parks will begin on Wednesday 7 January, with Tunsgate car park on Castle Hill being the first to have new payment machines installed.

Due to the layout of the payment machines in Tunsgate, the car park will be closed for up to three days while these upgrades are carried out. Clear signage will guide users to alternative car parks.

All other car parks will remain open as usual during these upgrade works.

Councillor Julia McShane, Leader of Guildford Borough Council, said:

"We know residents have been asking for easier ways to pay in our car parks. It's great that we're able to make these upgrades to our car park payment machines.

"The new machines will make parking quicker and more convenient, with options such as contactless and mobile payments. It means drivers don't have to worry about carrying cash with them either.

"It's a big step forward in making our car parks more accessible now and for the future."
