Our climate and nature strategy and action plan
Our new Climate and Nature Strategy and Action Plan sets out how we're responding to the climate emergency and ecological challenges in Guildford.
It brings together the latest evidence, local data and our shared priorities, and turns them into a coordinated programme of action to help us reach Net Zero carbon and support nature recovery across the borough.
What the strategy does
It sets out our long-term ambition
We are working towards becoming a Net Zero carbon borough by 2030, while protecting and enhancing the natural environment.
This strategy reflects our wider priorities to create a more sustainable, prosperous and inclusive borough for everyone.
How the strategy and action plan work together
The strategy sets out our long-term vision and priorities
The action plan turns that vision into practical steps we'll take to deliver real change.
Together, they ensure we have both a clear direction and detailed plan to achieve it.
It focuses on climate and nature together
The updated plan brings climate action and nature recovery into one joined-up approach.
It focuses on:
- reducing carbon emissions
- restoring biodiversity and green spaces
- adapting to climate impacts such as long-term flooding and extreme heat
- supporting healthier, more resilient communities
It identifies the challenges we face locally
Climate change is already affecting Guildford, including increased flood risk and rising temperatures.
The strategy sets out how we'll respond to these risks while supporting our communities and protecting our local natural environment.
It sets out practical actions
The action plan sets out the specific steps we will take across a range of areas, including:
- improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions from buildings
- supporting sustainable transport and travel choices
- reducing waste and making better use of resources
- enhancing green spaces and natural habitats e
- embedding sustainability in council services and operations
Each action has clear outcomes to help us track progress and measure success.
It follows a partnership approach
We know we can't achieve our goals alone. This strategy highlights how we'll work with:
- residents
- businesses
- community groups
- partner organisations
Together, we can reduce emissions, support nature and create lasting change across the borough.
It supports community action
This is a managed and monitored programme of work. We will:
- track progress against clear actions and targets
- report regularly on delivery
- continue to strengthen our data and understanding of emissions
- review and update the plan as needed
