Guildford Borough Council supports Clean Air Day 2026

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution awareness campaign. It brings together Councils, communities and organisations. In doing so it highlights the impact of polluted air and inspires positive change.
Taking action for cleaner air
Across Guildford, we're continuing work to improve air quality and protect the health of residents. This includes:
- monitoring pollution levels across the borough,
- developing our Air Quality Action Plan
- and working with partners to reduce emissions in key areas. This including Guildford town centre and busy transport corridors.
We're also taking practical steps to support cleaner air, including:
- Expanding the network of electric vehicle charging points
- Supporting sustainable and active travel, including walking and cycling schemes
- Working with partners on traffic management and reducing congestion
- Supporting local businesses and residents to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency
Air pollution is linked to a range of serious health conditions. In particular, those affecting children, older people and those with existing health issues. Tackling it is a key priority for us. It forms part of our wider commitment to creating a greener, healthier borough.
What you can do
Clean Air Day is an opportunity for everyone to take small, practical steps to improve air quality, such as:
- Walking, cycling or using public transport instead of driving
- Avoiding engine idling when parked
- Choosing cleaner ways to heat your home
- Sharing information with friends and family
Even simple changes can help reduce harmful pollution and create cleaner, healthier neighbourhoods.
Cllr Angela Goodwin, Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability at Guildford Borough Council, said:
"Clean Air Day is a valuable reminder of how the choices we make every day affect the air we breathe. Poor air quality has a real impact on people's health, especially the most vulnerable in our communities.
"By making simple changes; whether that's choosing to walk or cycle more, switching off your engine when parked, or thinking about how we heat our homes, we can all play a part in improving air quality across Guildford."
