Next step towards modern, low-emission fleet approved

Many of our vehicles and plant used to deliver essential services are now beyond their expected operating life, leading to higher maintenance costs and an increased risk of breakdowns. Replacing them will improve reliability, provide better value for money and help ensure services continue to run efficiently for residents. 

The Executive's approval allows the procurement process for replacement vehicles to begin. A further report will be brought back to the Executive with recommendations on contract awards and the most cost-effective option for each vehicle type, whether through purchase or lease. Any funding required will remain subject to approval by Full Council and, where necessary, Section 24 consent from West Surrey Council.

The replacement programme will also support the council's climate ambitions. Most new vans used for housing repairs, street cleansing, parks and waste services will be electric, while alternative fuels are being explored for larger vehicles such as refuse collection vehicles, street sweepers, tractors and ride-on mowers.

Where appropriate, larger vehicles will be specified to meet the new Euro 7 emissions standard, helping to reduce emissions while maintaining the reliability and performance needed to deliver frontline services.

Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, Cllr Angela Goodwin, said:
