York Road homelessness hub set for major upgrade following planning approval
We've secured planning permission for a major refurbishment and expansion of The Number 5 Hub homelessness accommodation on York Road.
The investment will improve accommodation and support services for people experiencing homelessness, helping to ensure this important local service continues to meet the needs of the community.
The Planning Committee approved the proposals at its meeting on Wednesday 26 August. The plans will bring together the existing facilities at 1, 3 and 5 York Road into a single, modern homelessness accommodation centre, providing additional capacity with space for up to 22 residents alongside improved communal areas and enhanced facilities.
Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2027 and take approximately 12 months to complete.
The Number 5 Hub provides short-term accommodation and support for people aged 18 and over who are rough sleeping in Guildford and have a local connection to the borough. The service is delivered by Riverside, one of the UK's leading homelessness and housing support providers, in partnership with Guildford Borough Council.
While levels of rough sleeping in Guildford remain low, we're committed to ensuring high-quality accommodation and services are available for anyone experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their home.

"Homelessness can happen to anyone. Life can change unexpectedly through a relationship breakdown, financial difficulties, ill health or the loss of a job, leaving people facing uncertainty and some of the most challenging circumstances they may ever experience.
"This investment in York Road will provide improved accommodation and facilities for people facing tough challenges. By creating more space and enhancing the support available on site, more people can find stability, rebuild their confidence, and take positive steps towards independent living.
"While rough sleeping levels in Guildford remain low, it is vital that the right help is there when people need it. These improvements will ensure The Number 5 Hub can continue to offer a safe and welcoming place to stay, alongside expert support and the opportunity for a brighter future.
